Before You Pack a Single Bag — Here's What Smart Travelers Do First

Let's be honest — most people spend more time researching where to eat than researching how to stay safe once they land. And sis, that has to change.

Travel is one of the most beautiful things you can do for your soul. New cultures, new skylines, new versions of yourself. But intentional travel means you show up prepared — not just with cute outfits, but with a plan.

Here's what every smart traveler should have in place before they ever step foot in an airport.

Know Before You Go

Every destination has a story beyond the Instagram highlight reel. The U.S. State Department issues travel advisories for every country in the world — rated on a scale from Level 1 (Exercise Normal Precautions) to Level 4 (Do Not Travel). Before you book, look it up. It takes five minutes and could change everything about how you plan your trip.

You can find advisories at travel.state.gov.

Register Your Trip — Seriously

This one is free, takes less than ten minutes, and most travelers have never heard of it. The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) allows you to register your international trip with the U.S. Embassy in your destination country. If there's an emergency — natural disaster, civil unrest, a family crisis back home — they can locate you and reach out.

Enroll at step.state.gov. Do it every time you travel internationally. No exceptions.

Travel Insurance Is Non-Negotiable

We know. You've heard this before. But let us say it one more time for the people in the back: travel insurance is not optional for the intentional traveler.

Medical emergencies abroad can cost tens of thousands of dollars out of pocket. Trip cancellations happen. Luggage gets lost. A comprehensive travel protection plan covers you in ways your regular health insurance simply won't.

If you're unsure where to start, ask your travel advisor — that's exactly what we're here for.

Your Pre-Travel Checklist

Before every trip, run through this list:

  • Check the State Department advisory for your destination

  • Enroll in STEP (step.state.gov)

  • Confirm your travel insurance is active and covers your specific trip type

  • Share your itinerary with a trusted person at home

  • Make copies of your passport and store them separately from the original

  • Research the local emergency numbers for your destination

The Bottom Line

Wandering wisely isn't about being fearful — it's about being free. When you know you're protected, you can actually be present. You can exhale. You can enjoy every single moment of the journey you worked so hard to take.

That's the Wander World way.
